Coffee Shop Etiquette

Coffee Shop Etiquette

Most coffee shops supply copies of the morning newspapers for patrons. If you are planning to chat for hours with a friend...DO NOT KEEP a newspaper secured under your coffee cup on the table in front of you while other patrons go in search of a copy! Release it for someone else who would like to read the news with their morning coffee!

Some coffee shops have games and toys for children to play with while their parent(s) are sipping coffee. DO NOT ALLOW your children to run around at high volume...breaking the ear drums of other patrons and risking an accidental cup of hot coffee being spilled on someone!

If it is necessary to conduct a phone call on your mobile...DO NOT INCLUDE everyone in your conversation! No one else is interested in your business!

Of course we have never encountered any of these problem situations at our coffee shop!

The house that Dad built

The day after Father's Day we had time between appointments
to take a slow drive past the house that my Dad built in 1953-54.

Walter Wilson, Dad's friend, instructed and helped with the construction. Up to that point Dad had no experience with building materials but he knew how to handle tools and follow directions. The house was "a dream come true" for my parents. It featured a "picture" window and piano windows (we never could afford a piano) in the living room. The walls were plaster so nails were not allowed to be hammered into the walls. The living room floor was hardwood and an ironing board was built into the kitchen wall. It was a two bedroom bungalow with a large backyard that eventually housed a carport that is still standing. Potatoes were planted in the front yard to nourish the soil (as someone had advised) before planting grass seed.

The basement was eventually developed to include a bedroom for me when my siblings arrived and briefly provided a home for my Dad's father. Later the basement became home for my mother's parents when my grandmother was ill. When she passed away my grandfather stayed in residence until the house was sold.

My parents sold the house in 1970 and moved out to Richmond. To my knowledge those buyers still occupy the house 49 years later.

Campbell Valley

We decided to enjoy the pathways at Campbell Valley Park this morning.

This is one of the wider pathway loops.

Maple Vine Trail is narrower and much quieter.

We wandered along this narrow trail...
...serenaded by bird song.
Not a soul in sight to interrupt our nature walk.

Another trip to UBC

Today was another one of those days that was punctuated by medical appointments. This morning we drove to UBC Hospital for a CT scan on John's shoulder which is chronically dislocated. John would like to have a surgical replacement of the shoulder joint but we are waiting for an opinion from an Orthopedic surgeon.

We parked near Thunderbird stadium and gazed up at this amazing metal bird.

UBC occupies 420 acres of land and is home to over 60,000 students
as well as 16,000 faculty and staff.
It feels like a city within a city!

On our return trip we drove past John's childhood house on West 16th Avenue.

The peeling paint is evidence that the house has not been repainted for many years!

British Invasion Car Show

This morning we discovered an interesting collection of British cars on display in Douglas Park.

An old MG...

...with the original steering wheel and dashboard.

There were several Morgans...

...and this Morris Minor as well as many Jaguars.
